It’s finally that time of year again. Shaved ice pit stops, warmer temperatures and sunkissed skin. Before you bask yourself in the Hawaiian sun, make sure you’re protecting your skin for that healthy, summer glow. Transitioning your beauty regimen from Spring to Summer requires more than just a good sunscreen. We’ve compiled our must-have summer beauty products that will keep you glowing all season long.

After a full day’s worth of buildup from sunscreen, makeup or the sun, use a gentle cleanser that will break down excess sebum, makeup and other impurities without causing irritation.

Our pick: SkinMedica Facial Cleanser. An antioxidant-rich face wash ideal for all skin types. Camellia oleifera leaf extract neutralizes free radicals to prevent visible signs of aging  from environmental aggressors while glycerin hydrates the skin, giving balance.

The sun can cause havoc on the skin like hyperpigmentation, sun damage and dullness. Adding a serum works well with delivering powerful ingredients directly into the skin, due to the high concentration of active ingredients.

Our pick: SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic. This daytime, vitamin C serum provides environmental protection, softens lines, firms skin and brightens your complexion.

It’s never too hot for hydration. Your skin needs it year-round. You can put your heavy creams away in storage and opt for something lighter during the summer months.

Our pick: SkinMedica HA5. This moisturizing facial serum provides 8 continuous hours of deep hydration and has five types of hydrators that immediately go to work replenishing your skin’s hyaluronic acid. Ideal for all skin types.

For those with extremely dry skin that need the extra hydration, try the Ultra Nourishing moisturizer with TriHex technology from Alastin. This has unique combination of peptides that target collagen and elastin, while nourishing and hydrating the skin.

Always start your day with applying a sunscreen on your face, before you apply your makeup. This will act as a protective base and should always be a minimum of SPF 30.

Our pick: Alastin HydraTint Pro Mineral Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 36. This is a fan favorite of Honolulu MedSpa as it’s lightweight, protects from both UVA/UVB rays and has a natural hint of color compatible with all skin types.

Retinols are always recommended, but if you’re having more fun in the sun than normal, it may not be wise to use your trusty retinol nightly. Consider rebuilding collagen and preventing anti-aging with the Alastin Reginerating Skin Nectar. Clear damage and debris on the skin while promoting healthy collagen and elastin.

If you would like to consult on a skin care routine that fits your lifestyle and skin needs, please contact Honolulu MedSpa at 808-528-0888. We do offer complimentary consultations Monday – Saturday by appointment.

Now go have some (protected) fun in the sun!

Nowadays, people are concerned with aging more than ever. We all want to live long, happy and healthy lives while trying to slow down the aging process as much as we can. It’s no wonder that the anti-aging market is a multi-billion dollar business. We are all searching for the best products that help correct our skin. While genetics do play a role on how we will age, daily habits and our lifestyle is more telling than how our parents aged over the years.

Just like our family medical history, the same will definitely go for our skin, but you also have a say in your lifestyle choices. Smoking, sun exposure, eating habits and overall health has a lot to do with how our skin ages. Another factor that can cause aging is stress. It will break down the skin on a cellular level, speeding up the aging process and leaving us to look much older than we truly are. Stress can also cause your skin to breakout, encourage hair loss, and breakdown collagen within the skin, ultimately causing more wrinkles.

If you choose to smoke, receive unprotected sun exposure, and do not choose a healthy diet, eventually it will catch up to you despite you having “good genes”.

The great news is that if you weren’t born into “great genes,” it’s never too late to start doing something about it. You can start eating healthy, getting enough sleep, using a proper skincare regimen suited for your skin type, wear sunscreen everyday, work out, and practice stress relieving exercises.

As time goes on you will notice the difference, and will know who actually takes great care of their skin and who doesn’t.

Winter has officially arrived in Hawaii believe it or not. With colder temperatures, it can lead to Itchy dry skin, tightness and flakiness. These are often not results for a radiant, hydrated complexion, but here are some of our skincare tips to keep you glowing in the cooler months ahead.

A fan favorite! This serum-based, gentle, and exfoliating treatment revolutionizes traditional microdermabrasion, makes your pores appear smaller, and leaves your skin feeling baby soft and silky smooth. For those who need additional hydration, we do offer hyperbaric oxygen infusion to help restore and balance the skin.

Exfoliating is the key to brighter skin! It sloughs off the dead skin and helps remove the flakiness. Your moisturizer will even penetrate deeper into the skin. The key for exfoliating is using an exfoliator with microbeads that are gentle.

We offer physician dispensed skincare at Honolulu MedSpa and are available to talk skin with you if you need a little guidance. Some of the traditional “exfoliating” cleansers might leave your skin dry and tight during the winter months. Some of our favorites include cleansers from both SkinMedica and SkinCeuticals.

During the summer months, using a lighter moisturizer is definitely a must. But, as soon as the temperature drops, you want to use a heavier moisturizer that is the right one for your skin type. This is crucial in your winter skincare regimen.

Using a serum am/pm with your daily moisturizer can be a huge game changer in the way your skin looks. It’s lightweight and the high concentration of powerful ingredients penetrates deeply into the skin. This is great for targeting specific skincare concerns.

Even if it’s cloudy or raining, UV light is always present and will cause irreversible damage if it’s not protected against. Always wear a minimum of SPF 30 to fully protect against premature aging, pigmentation, sunburn and dark spots.

Having chapped lips is a huge sign of ultra dryness. Invest in a good lip treatment that will keep your lips hydrated and plump year round.

For a personal skincare diagnosis, we invite you to come into our spa and receive a complimentary consultation to see which products are best for you. We carry the best in medical grade skincare

While a 12-step beauty routine isn’t for everyone, there is an added step that everyone should get on board with-serum. Adding a serum to your daily skincare routine can add a boost of results that can help with fine lines, dark spots, loss of firmness, blemishes and a healthier complexion.

We like to think of a serums as a vitamin-packed shot you add to your daily smoothie in the morning for targeted results.

What is a serum?  A serum is a skincare product that has a gel or light lotion consistency with a higher concentration of performance ingredients to use under a moisturizer. They are made up of smaller molecules that penetrate deeper into the skin, making it great to target specific skin concerns.

How do I use a serum?  Generally, you would cleanse your skin and tone your skin, then apply the serum right before you would apply your moisturizer or sunscreen. You press the serum into the skin gently with your middle and ring finger with palms to set the product in place.

Can I use a serum as my moisturizer?  No. Although serums are usually full of moisturizing ingredients and help retain skin moisture, your moisturizer is meant to create a protective barrier to keep environmental irritants and debris out, and keep skin moisturized. Usually people with drier or mature skin need a heavier moisturizer, which serums will not provide.

How often should I use a serum?  It’s usually a daily routine you now add with your other skincare products, but check the label. Trust us, it’s worth the extra step!

How much should I apply to my skin?  Think of your face like a sponge. All you need is a few drops. Remember that serums are very concentrated, a little goes a long way.

Do you recommend any serums?  Yes!

SkinCeuticals PHLORETIN CF:  A daytime vitamin c antioxidant face serum that delivers advanced environmental protection and diminishes the appearance of fine lines and discoloration. Great for normal, oily, and combination skin types.

SkinCeuticals CE FERULIC:  Known as the holy grail of serums, this is a daytime vitamin c serum that delivers advanced environmental protection and improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness, and brightens the skin’s complexion. Great for dry, normal and sensitive skin types.

You will notice that after incorporating a serum to your daily regimen, it will help you get the skin of your dreams.

Right now, we are having a monthly promotion on our serums mentioned above. If you purchase one, you get the SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF of your choice for FREE. ($34 VALUE).

Inside Honolulu MedSpa: Beauty Talk with Olivia & Kanoe

What’s your take on beauty when you work at Hawaii’s leading medical spa? We chatted with two of Honolulu MedSpa’s top medical aestheticians and laser technicians, Olivia Bears and Kanoe Oda, to find out.

Olivia fell into aesthetics accidentally after happening upon a booth for a beauty and wellness school at a college fair. Kanoe, on the other hand, was always interested in looking good, and knew skin care would be a perfect fit for her. Both ladies do some of the finest laser hair removal, facials and chemical peels you’ll experience anywhere on the island. But what do they follow when it comes to their personal beauty routines? We knew you’d ask. Read on for their answers.

How has living in Hawaii impacted your perspective on beauty and wellness in general?

Olivia: Hawaii is such a melting pot of cultures. Living here has reinforced for me just how different all of our needs and wants are in the sense of beauty. So having an open mind is key.

Kanoe: Living in Hawaii in particular, being in the sun is almost unavoidable and that has definitely made me realize how important it is to protect our skin from the sun.

Can you describe to us your personal skincare routine?

Olivia: I tend to have more temperamental skin, but I’m a product junkie, so it’s a problem. I love trying new things, but sometimes my skin doesn’t respond very nicely, so for the most part I keep it simple. As of right now, in the morning I use SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Gel and a physical, zinc-based sunscreen. Before bed, I always use my SkinMedica Retinol, usually followed by SM TNS Recovery Complex, and then usually finished with my SC Phyto Corrective Gel.

Kanoe: I think simple is best! After cleansing and toning, prevent, correct and protect.

What skincare products or ingredients are you most excited about these days?

Olivia: I love products that work overtime! Any product that can address multiple concerns or is diverse enough to use on multiple skin types is great in my book.

Kanoe: Antioxidants are amazing! I’m really excited about bringing SkinCeuticals back to the spa. 😉

Who is your beauty icon? Why?

Kanoe: Jessica Alba, she has a natural beauty which I aspire to have. And also with her new skincare line, she knows the importance of good quality ingredients and keeping beauty simple.

If we looked, what would we find in your bag right now?

Olivia: Lip balm, HydroFlask, hand lotion and doTerra Peppermint Beadlets.

Kanoe: Lip tint, eyeliner and powder.

What one treatment could you not live without?

Olivia: Laser hair removal.
Kanoe: Botox. 🙂

If you could speak to her now, what skincare or beauty advice would you give your 20-year-old self?

Olivia: “Stop looking for a ‘cure-all!’ There’s no quick fix for anything in life. Just take care of yourself!”

Kanoe: “Stay out of the sun!”

Give us your best anti-aging tip?

Olivia: Hydrate and start preventative measures young! It’s SO much easier to prevent aging than it is to reverse aging.

Kanoe: Always use sunscreen and take antioxidants.

What’s your personal beauty philosophy?

Olivia: Beauty starts on the inside. Happy people are the most beautiful people. But I also believe that we feel our best when our outside matches how we feel on the inside.

Kanoe: True beauty is a lifestyle and comes from the inside out.

Anti-Aging Skincare Part Three: Skincare in Your 50s and Beyond

skincare in your fifties

Aloha, Beautiful.

By this time, in your fifth decade, you absolutely owe it to yourself to treat your skin with care, respect, and gratitude.

Skincare in your Fifties

Combining multiple treatments is the key for optimal, long-lasting results at this age. For prevention and restoration, BOTOX® and dermal fillers can temporarily work to re-volumize facial contours and smooth over stubborn lines and wrinkles. However, in our fifties, we become more and more familiar with dark spots from scarring and sun damage.

At Honolulu Med Spa we often recommend AFT/IPL for patients in this age group whose main concern is color correction. We love this because it precisely targets broken blood vessels, dark melanin spots associated with freckles, sun spots, flushing, ruddy skin, and rosacea. Despite its strength, this treatment also gently preserves surrounding healthy tissue.

For other concerns, such as loose skin and loss of volume, there are now more comprehensive treatments, like the 4D Facelift, that work wonders for skin rejuvenation. Treatments such as facelifts should be done in a series over several months, with follow-up maintenance for best results.

Of course, we would be remiss if we neglected to mention that it is, in fact, hard to put a number on skin. So much depends on lifestyle, genetics, and even how we deal with stress. Honestly, no size fits all. That’s why at Honolulu MedSpa, we offer complimentary consultations that outline a manageable, proactive skin care treatment plan tailored to each patient’s needs.
