Da Cove Health Bar and Cafe- This is a great spot near the famous Diamond Head Crater hike. They have the best acai bowls, fresh smoothies, juices and also wraps. (Probably the best acai bowls in Honolulu!)
Bogart’s Cafe- Just next door to Da Cove, is this newly renovated local hot-spot! They have the best coffee, bagel/bagel spreads (homemade cream cheese), and everything eggs. They also have a heavier meal menu if you’re wanting something a little more hearty! This place is a must.
Leahi Health- This is a great plant-based restaurant where they take pride in using the healthiest, organic ingredients in all of their smoothies, sandwiches and salads. With 3 locations throughout the island (Aina Haina, Kaimuki and Kailua), you can be sure to find this spot wherever you are on the island. They have the best tacos and the yummiest smoothies!
Uncle Clay’s House of Pure Aloha- If you’re wanting the best all-natural shaved ice for a sweet treat, look no further than Uncle Clay’s! Their syrups are homemade with all natural ingredients and use no artificial flavors, sweeteners or colors! Once you have this shaved ice, you will understand what we mean… It’s a taste of pure aloha!
WHERE TO DRINK:
Rum Fire- Not only do that have great drinks, but the view here is incredible and a great spot to feel like a tourist or bring guests. Happy Hour is 3-5:00 P.M. daily.
Mai Tai Bar at the Royal Hawaiian- They own the name Mai-Tai Bar for a reason. They truly have the best mai-tai’s in Hawaii. Happy Hour is 4-7:00 daily.
Doraku Waikiki- If you love sake, this is a spot to come to for happy hour. They offer not only a great drink menu, but also food menu! Happy hour is 4-6:00 daily. WHERE TO STAY:
Alohilani- a newer hotel in Waikiki that offers an infinity pool and gorgeous happy hour deck. A 280,000-gallon indoor Oceanarium which is great to see during feeding times and two restaurants by Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto. They have a luxurious club and spa which offer fitness and yoga classes, and also two complimentary tennis courts.

THINGS TO DO:
Diamond Head hike- Even though it might be touristy, this is one of the most iconic hikes with panoramic views. This is a hike that the entire family can do that it’s a very simple trail that takes up 25 min. up if you have a moderate pace.
Pillbox hike- This is another short hike with incredible views of Lanikai’s twin islands, It is one of the most picturesque hikes and moderately easy.

How’s your New Year’s resolutions coming along? Are you hitting your goals, or have you gotten off track? Usually, more than half of all resolutions fail, but it’s all about creating goals that are achievable and realistic. Start off by doing small, life-changing measures and work your way up. You don’t need to try and do them all at once.
Here’s how to stay focused on your New Year’s Goals:
MAKE A LIST
Write down your goals where you will see them. When you see what you’re working towards you will start putting the focus in and that will help keep you on track.
Be realistic and start with goals that are easy to achieve. For example: Drink more water, meditate more, eat more plants, rather than eating out, cook more healthy foods, or go for a walk in the park. Small goals lead to big goals and that is what we want to work towards.
SET MANAGEABLE GOALS
Don’t create a list that is too difficult to achieve. Be realistic about your time and your lifestyle. If you have to get the kids to practice immediately after work, schedule time for yourself in the morning or take a walk while they are on the field. Be realistic and don’t be too hard on yourself if the unexpected comes up.
HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE
Get a family member or close friend to help you stay focused and accountable. Consider your needs and what keeps you motivated. If group settings work best for you take this into consideration before you plan your goals.
CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESSES
By working on your list and crossing off the goals you have achieved, you gain confidence to tackle your next goal. Keep moving forward and know that there will be peaks and valleys along the way.

We’ve all heard the popular misconceptions and rumored wives tales about beauty, but are they right? We are settling all the facts that are the most popular myths that we’ve all grown up to hear over the years…
MYTH #1: You don’t need to moisturize if you have oily skin.
FACT: No matter what your skin type is, you need to be using some kind of moisturizer to keep your skin balanced and nourished. While oily skin requires the least amount of added moisture, a moisturizer is still vital for nourishing and hydrating the skin.
MYTH #2: You only get acne from not washing your face.
FACT: Most cosmetic products that provide color and create illusion on the skin leave a toxic film on the skin’s surface that can cause irritation, inflammation, dehydration and clog the pores. But keep in mind that genetics, and hormonal fluctuations can cause those breakouts too. Many times meeting with a licensed skin professional is the best way to start your clear skin journey. It could be as simple as proper clinical and homecare maintenance to clear up irritation.
MYTH #3: You can get rid of cellulite permanently
FACT: Ultimately cellulite tends to be hereditary; it doesn’t just affect people who are overweight. Exercising and keeping the area toned reduces it, but you can only improve the appearance.
MYTH #4: People with dry skin age faster
FACT: The main cause of ageing skin is predominantly sun exposure, smoking and pollution. Over time, sun exposure breaks down collagen fibers which keep the skin looking youthful and plump. Dry skin does not cause wrinkles or ageing, however it can emphasise them.
MYTH #5: Applying a higher SPF means you can stay in the sun for a long time
FACT: Theoretically, a higher SPF increases the amount of time you can stay in the sun and be protected, however, you still need to reapply regularly as sunscreen with a high SPF wears off as well. Ingredients play a role in protections as well. Look with products that have a high zinc level for optimal protection.
MYTH #6: All-Natural products are the best
FACT: Natural may be “in” and sound good, but the fact is that these products hardly ever deliver on their promises. Look for medical-grade products with pharmaceutical-grade ingredients for products that will truly change, correct and improve the skin.
MYTH #7: All I need to do for great skin is drink 8 glasses of water a day
FACT: While water is great for overall health, it is a small part of the picture when it comes to the quality of your skin. Protecting your skin with sunscreen and using a proper skincare regimen is vital to keep your skin looking its best.
MYTH #8: You should use the same skincare products for day and night
FACT: During the day, your skin is in “protect” mode, and you should help it on its way with products that offer defense from free radical damage and sunlight. Always wear sunscreen or skincare products that provide SPF protection and include antioxidants. At night, your skin is no longer defending itself from pollution or light, and so night time products tend to be more regenerative and contain restorative ingredients such as peptides, vitamins and retinol.
MYTH #9: Rubbing alcohol will “kill” your acne.
FACT: Rubbing alcohol is much too drying and irritating for skin. It will dry you out so much that your skin will overcompensate by producing excess sebum and clog you up.
MYTH #10 Botox prevents wrinkles permanently
FACT: Botox can help prevent deep imprinted lines that we refer to as wrinkles because of the effect of relaxing the muscles that can cause creases in the skin. When you have Botox, you are preventing fine lines and preventing the deepening of those wrinkles that you already have. If you start early, you will atrophy the facial muscles and weaken them so you don’t have to get Botox as often when you are older.

Once upon a time (not that long ago, actually), I devoted a lot of time to taking care of my skin. I followed a multi-step morning AND evening skincare regimen. I used only professional quality products. I got facials and chemical peels to improve my complexion and slow the signs of aging.
But then, as my life continued to evolve, self-care began to fall by the wayside. I became a mother, and my morning and evening cosmetic routines changed drastically. My family moved to Hawaii, so the amount of time I spent outside in the sun increased. And most recently, I launched my business as an artist, which means that I am constantly squinting and frowning as I concentrate on painting details.

Exercise is a huge stress reliever and releases endorphins. Not only is it good for the mind, but you can actually get in a workout too. Grab a friend for moral support, or go it alone for some time to really clear your mind and think.
Start some breathing exercises to get more oxygen into your body and release tension throughout the body. You can do this anytime or anywhere. There are even some free apps that can help guide you with meditating, even if it’s just for 5 minutes.
Remove Yourself From Negativity
Negative thoughts and criticism never help the situation. Shift your attention to things that do help. Stay close to people that care about you, do something nice for yourself, set a goal and complete it.
Different scents have different effects on the brain. Some have the ability to calm and relax, which is why aromatherapy can be useful for people dealing with a lot of stress. Try adding lavender oil in a diffuser or even applying it under your nose for an instant calming effect on the mind.
Listening to relaxing music can put your mind at ease. Have it playing in the background while you are working or even while you are driving. Music is an instant mood booster!

At just 23 years old, Olivia Bears is already one of our top medical aestheticians and laser technicians. You might have met her if you’ve come in for laser hair removal, Venus Freeze, or one of our rejuvenating facials. We asked Olivia about her work, her personal beauty routine, and her “famous last words.” Read on for her delightful answers.
Tell us a little bit about you. How did you end up working in the medical spa industry?
Olivia: I’ve always been interested in beauty, but as I got older, my interests were more specific to skin care. When I was 17, I went to a college fair and happened upon a booth for a beauty and wellness school in my area. That’s where my interest grew into a passion. When I moved to Hawaii in 2014, I decided to further my education in esthetics. With the help of my mentors at the Makana Esthetics and Wellness Academy, I was directed to the field of medical aesthetics. I don’t regret a single decision along the way throughout my journey!
What’s a typical day like at Honolulu MedSpa?
Olivia: Busy! Every day is different when you’re working one-on-one with clients because every client’s needs and expectations are different. I could be hopping from appointment to appointment every half hour in the laser hair removal room or I could be spending a little more in-depth time with a client in the facial room talking about different treatments or products he or she could try. It’s exciting!
What qualities do you think someone needs to have to be able to do your job well?
Olivia: Patience, listening skills, the ability to multi-task and be adaptable, and above all… passion for skin care!
What’s your favorite treatment to perform for your patients?
Olivia: I enjoy our medical grade facials the most because they give me time to sit down with a client and get a feel for what he or she is really wanting to get out of his or her treatment and skin in general.
What’s the funniest thing a patient has said to you?
Olivia: While performing a HydraFacial on a first-time client, he said, “Whoa! I feel like a cat is licking me, but I like it!”
What would you say to someone who’s never been to a medical spa before?
Olivia: Don’t be scared! Come in for a consultation. We’ll listen to you and get you started in the right direction.
What is the biggest misunderstanding people have about your job?
Olivia: I don’t get to get facials all the time. 🙁 Also, there is SO much thought that goes into treatment and products that I discuss with clients — skin care is anything but black and white.
What do you think makes Honolulu MedSpa the best medspa facility on the islands?
Olivia: I feel like we genuinely care about our clients’ well-being, but we also care about what’s doable for a client. We understand that beauty doesn’t come cheap, so we really try to guide our clients towards what will give them the best results for their goals and skin type. Not what will make us the most money.
