HOW OFTEN DO YOU REALLY NEED A FACIAL?

Electrodessication - Skin tag removal

Getting a professional facial isn’t just for you to unwind, relax, or splurge once in a blue moon. They play a big role in keeping your skin healthy, balanced and youthful. Think of a facial as a “spring cleaning” for your skin. While practicing good skin care at home is key, you should also visit your aesthetician every 4-6 weeks for that hands-on deep cleaning. It takes that amount of time for the skin cells to move through a full life cycle of cell growth and make their way from the dermis to the surface of the skin where they are naturally sloughed off.

Each one of us can benefit from a professional facial, but those with acneic skin, clogged pores or brown spots, consistent care is required to always stay on top of the condition to get the skin looking clear. Facials offer many skin benefits, and some are in need of it more than others.

Benefits of a facial include:

  • Expert skin analysis from our Aesthetician who understands your skin type and how to care for it.
  • Professional strength exfoliation to smooth the skin, lighten discoloration from sun and breakouts.
  • Both manual and mechanical extractions of blackheads and clogged pores to give you  smooth, balanced skin.
  • Intensive hydration to repair the skin’s moisture barrier to keep skin looking plump and dewy.
  • Increased circulation for brighter and glowing skin.
  • Once established, a regimen to maintain your results. Honolulu MedSpa offers a variety of facial add-ons to keep your skin looking its best.
  • Professional guidance for your morning and nightime at-home regimen.
  • Time for yourself.

We believe that clear skin can boost confidence. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important, as is regular facial appointments and proper home care. This all works together to leave you with the most healthy, rejuvenated, glowing skin. KEEPING YOUR SKIN HEALTHY THIS WINTER

Winter has officially arrived in Hawaii believe it or not. With colder temperatures, it can lead to Itchy dry skin, tightness and flakiness. These are often not results for a radiant, hydrated complexion, but here are some of our skincare tips to keep you glowing in the cooler months ahead.

BOOK A HYDRAFACIAL AT HONOLULU MEDSPA

A fan favorite! This serum-based, gentle, and exfoliating treatment revolutionizes traditional microdermabrasion, makes your pores appear smaller, and leaves your skin feeling baby soft and silky smooth. For those who need additional hydration, we do offer hyperbaric oxygen infusion to help restore and balance the skin.

EXFOLIATING

Exfoliating is the key to brighter skin! It sloughs off the dead skin and helps remove the flakiness. Your moisturizer will even penetrate deeper into the skin. The key for exfoliating is using an exfoliator with microbeads that are gentle.

USE A CREAM, OR GENTLE FACIAL CLEANSER

We offer physician dispensed skincare at Honolulu MedSpa and are available to talk skin with you if you need a little guidance. Some of the traditional “exfoliating” cleansers might leave your skin dry and tight during the winter months. Some of our favorites include cleansers from both SkinMedica and SkinCeuticals.

CHANGE YOUR MOISTURIZER

During the summer months, using a lighter moisturizer is definitely a must. But, as soon as the temperature drops, you want to use a heavier moisturizer that is the right one for your skin type. This is crucial in your winter skincare regimen.

ADD A SERUM

Using a serum am/pm with your daily moisturizer can be a huge game changer in the way your skin looks. It’s lightweight and the high concentration of powerful ingredients penetrates deeply into the skin. This is great for targeting specific skincare concerns.

WEAR SPF

Even if it’s cloudy or raining, UV light is always present and will cause irreversible damage if it’s not protected against. Always wear a minimum of SPF 30 to fully protect against premature aging, pigmentation, sunburn and dark spots.

PROTECT YOUR LIPS

Having chapped lips is a huge sign of ultra dryness. Invest in a good lip treatment that will keep your lips hydrated and plump year round.

For a personal skincare diagnosis, we invite you to come into our spa and receive a complimentary consultation to see which products are best for you. We carry the best in medical grade skincare

TREATMENT TRENDS IN THE PAST 10 YEARS

Thanks to revolutionary new technology increasing in the beauty industry over the years, patients can now enjoy satisfying results without committing to more invasive procedures and the high costs that come with them. It’s no surprise that more non-surgical treatments are more popular than ever now. Today we can improve our looks without suffering or breaking the bank. Take a look at some of the most popular treatment trends we’ve seen in the past ten years:

LASER HAIR REMOVAL
Waxing and shaving have now become things of the past. With the advancements in technology, Laser Hair removal is on the rise. Known in the past for being expensive and painful, it’s now more comfortable and much cheaper than it was 10 years ago. We can also treat a broad range of skin colors where in the past only lighter skin patients were considered candidates. More comfortable, less expensive and permanent hair reduction… you can’t say no to that!

ADVANCED LASERS FOR SKIN RESURFACING
With advancements in laser technology over the last 10 years, it is now possible to reduce, and in some cases remove facial wrinkles, acne scars and brown spots, without minimal disruption and downtime. Skin resurfacing has increased in popularity due to the fact that the skin is constantly exposed to harmful elements, like UV rays, environmental pollutants and even chemicals found in everyday products. Lasers, light based treatments and even skin tightening services have become more affordable, offer little to no downtime, and have become the go-to option for those who want to rejuvenate the skin without risky surgery.

THE RISE OF INJECTABLES
Injectable services such as fillers and neuromodulators are still one of the biggest trends in facial rejuvenation, seeing a total rise of 180% since 2000. Over the years, people are wanting to refresh their looks with less invasive procedures and without the cost that comes with cosmetic plastic surgery. Injectables give pleasing results with hardly any downtime, and can take 5-10 years off the look of the face. Today people are more openly talking about receiving these types of treatments, posting their before and after photos on social media and even encouraging friends and family to meet with their favorite injector. The days of hiding your Botox appointments are long gone!

BRO-TOX & BEYOND
Men have a growing interest of getting rid of wrinkles, frown lines, and achieving a more youthful, rested look. Over the last 10 years, men receiving medical spa services has risen with the idea that considering non-invasive cosmetic procedures can help them to appear more approachable, to stay competitive in an ever-younger millennial workforce, and to increase their confidence. Botox, fillers, facial services and even laser hair removal are treatment trends that are not slowing down with the male patient.

Inside Honolulu MedSpa: Beauty Talk with Olivia & Kanoe

What’s your take on beauty when you work at Hawaii’s leading medical spa? We chatted with two of Honolulu MedSpa’s top medical aestheticians and laser technicians, Olivia Bears and Kanoe Oda, to find out.

Olivia fell into aesthetics accidentally after happening upon a booth for a beauty and wellness school at a college fair. Kanoe, on the other hand, was always interested in looking good, and knew skin care would be a perfect fit for her. Both ladies do some of the finest laser hair removal, facials and chemical peels you’ll experience anywhere on the island. But what do they follow when it comes to their personal beauty routines? We knew you’d ask. Read on for their answers.

How has living in Hawaii impacted your perspective on beauty and wellness in general?

Olivia: Hawaii is such a melting pot of cultures. Living here has reinforced for me just how different all of our needs and wants are in the sense of beauty. So having an open mind is key.

Kanoe: Living in Hawaii in particular, being in the sun is almost unavoidable and that has definitely made me realize how important it is to protect our skin from the sun.

Can you describe to us your personal skincare routine?

Olivia: I tend to have more temperamental skin, but I’m a product junkie, so it’s a problem. I love trying new things, but sometimes my skin doesn’t respond very nicely, so for the most part I keep it simple. As of right now, in the morning I use SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Gel and a physical, zinc-based sunscreen. Before bed, I always use my SkinMedica Retinol, usually followed by SM TNS Recovery Complex, and then usually finished with my SC Phyto Corrective Gel.

Kanoe: I think simple is best! After cleansing and toning, prevent, correct and protect.

What skincare products or ingredients are you most excited about these days?

Olivia: I love products that work overtime! Any product that can address multiple concerns or is diverse enough to use on multiple skin types is great in my book.

Kanoe: Antioxidants are amazing! I’m really excited about bringing SkinCeuticals back to the spa. 😉

Who is your beauty icon? Why?

Kanoe: Jessica Alba, she has a natural beauty which I aspire to have. And also with her new skincare line, she knows the importance of good quality ingredients and keeping beauty simple.

If we looked, what would we find in your bag right now?

Olivia: Lip balm, HydroFlask, hand lotion and doTerra Peppermint Beadlets.

Kanoe: Lip tint, eyeliner and powder.

What one treatment could you not live without?

Olivia: Laser hair removal.
Kanoe: Botox. 🙂

If you could speak to her now, what skincare or beauty advice would you give your 20-year-old self?

Olivia: “Stop looking for a ‘cure-all!’ There’s no quick fix for anything in life. Just take care of yourself!”

Kanoe: “Stay out of the sun!”

Give us your best anti-aging tip?

Olivia: Hydrate and start preventative measures young! It’s SO much easier to prevent aging than it is to reverse aging.

Kanoe: Always use sunscreen and take antioxidants.

What’s your personal beauty philosophy?

Olivia: Beauty starts on the inside. Happy people are the most beautiful people. But I also believe that we feel our best when our outside matches how we feel on the inside.

Kanoe: True beauty is a lifestyle and comes from the inside out.

Anti-Aging Skincare Part Three: Skincare in Your 50s and Beyond

skincare in your fifties

Aloha, Beautiful.

By this time, in your fifth decade, you absolutely owe it to yourself to treat your skin with care, respect, and gratitude.

Skincare in your Fifties

Combining multiple treatments is the key for optimal, long-lasting results at this age. For prevention and restoration, BOTOX® and dermal fillers can temporarily work to re-volumize facial contours and smooth over stubborn lines and wrinkles. However, in our fifties, we become more and more familiar with dark spots from scarring and sun damage.

At Honolulu Med Spa we often recommend AFT/IPL for patients in this age group whose main concern is color correction. We love this because it precisely targets broken blood vessels, dark melanin spots associated with freckles, sun spots, flushing, ruddy skin, and rosacea. Despite its strength, this treatment also gently preserves surrounding healthy tissue.

For other concerns, such as loose skin and loss of volume, there are now more comprehensive treatments, like the 4D Facelift, that work wonders for skin rejuvenation. Treatments such as facelifts should be done in a series over several months, with follow-up maintenance for best results.

Of course, we would be remiss if we neglected to mention that it is, in fact, hard to put a number on skin. So much depends on lifestyle, genetics, and even how we deal with stress. Honestly, no size fits all. That’s why at Honolulu MedSpa, we offer complimentary consultations that outline a manageable, proactive skin care treatment plan tailored to each patient’s needs.

Anti-Aging Skincare Part Two: Skincare in Your 40s

If you’re like us, you’re probably amazed at how much the body has a mind of its own, especially as time passes. When we’re young we think we are completely in control of our beauty. We may even take our skin for granted. Then, come middle age our whole perspective changes. We’re grateful for days without eye bags. We realize our smile lines are here to stay (not just when we’re smiling.) And we begin to think fondly of the days when we rolled out of bed looking fabulous, despite a past-midnight bedtime.

At Honolulu Med Spa we see patients of all ages and believe us, there is always something you can do to improve your complexion and feel happier about your skin right now, no matter what age you are. We’ve put together this simple two-part guide (see Part 1 here) to introduce you to your biggest skin care challenges at every decade of life, and your best options for overcoming them.

Without further ado, here’s your skin care report for your 40s, 50s and beyond.

Skincare in Your 40s

Fabulous at 40, right? What a great age to be! You’ve played, you’ve worked, and you still have so much living to do.

If you haven’t paid your skin enough attention until now, book a complimentary skincare consultation with a Honolulu MedSpa skincare expert and get a tailored age-prevention and skin restoration plan in action. It won’t cost you a dime to get an assessment and it may just give you a brighter outlook on the coming ten years. If you have been a diligent skincare student during your “younger” years, it’s very likely you are still getting carded. If this is the case, reward yourself with monthly facial.

Throughout this decade, lines will become more defined and the skin will inevitably begin to lose elastin and collagen which equals volume loss. In fact, at this point, it is very likely that your skin cycle has slowed down from its youthful 28-day cycle to a long-winded 40 days. Good news: Skincare scientists have cultivated powerful tools for fending off skin laxity, uneven tone, and creases.

Meet your new best friends: Venus Freeze + Injectables.

A Honolulu MedSpa favorite, Venus Freeze uses a multipolar radio frequency and magnetic pulse fields to stimulate the production of new collagen. This super-charged boost in collagen and elastin can quickly and effectively soften some of the most deep-set creases while firming the newly revitalized skin. This process actually continues for an additional six to 12 months afterward. The results are smoother, firmer, and more supple skin around the chin, jowls, throat, and jaw—all very common areas of concern during our fifties. Typically, patients book maintenance appointments quarterly; however, we have some who opt for this treatment monthly!

Let’s talk JUVÉDERM®

Let’s talk a little bit about injectables. Many men and women in their fifties choose to receive BOTOX® injections every three months to minimize the appearance of new lines around the eyes and forehead. Our favorite fillers, JUVÉDERM®, JUVÉDERM VOLUMA, and VOLBELLA®, can provide just the right amount of plump to areas that reveal volume loss, such as around the eyes, the cheeks, nasolabial folds, and mouth. JUVÉDERM® especially has truly captured the market share on quick, nearly painless plumping for fuller lips, smoother skin, and volume restoration.
