We all age, not just women, but men too. Our society has become tremendously age-conscious, and the culture of how aged celebrities look so much younger than they are has caught on with the general public. There is pressure among men of all ages to have a certain look, and they are finding it difficult to achieve with just diet and exercise alone, so they want a little help.
Men are increasingly seeking out non-invasive treatments in search of eternal youth. Many men seek these procedures to boost their appearance in a competitive work environment and just overall want to look and feel their best.
Here are the top non-invasive cosmetic procedures for men:
BOTOX for Crow’s feet and Lines, commonly referred to as “BROTOX”
CHEMICAL PEELS for Fresher, Younger Skin
DERMAL FILLERS for a Youthful Appearance
KYBELLA to Help Get Rid of a Double Chin
PAINLESS LASER HAIR REMOVAL to Remove Unwanted Hair
COOLSCULPTING to Freeze Away Unwanted Stubborn Fat
The advantage of these procedures is the fact that there is little-to-no downtime and the results are extremely fast without exposing that you’ve had any type of treatment done. Nowadays, these non-invasive treatments have become more affordable than even just a few years ago, making them economically feasible for anyone. It’s an investment in themselves, rather than an unnecessary expense.
These procedures are an opportunity to take a few years off while putting your best face forward.

Thanks to revolutionary new technology increasing in the beauty industry over the years, patients can now enjoy satisfying results without committing to more invasive procedures and the high costs that come with them. It’s no surprise that more non-surgical treatments are more popular than ever now. Today we can improve our looks without suffering or breaking the bank. Take a look at some of the most popular treatment trends we’ve seen in the past ten years:
LASER HAIR REMOVAL
Waxing and shaving have now become things of the past. With the advancements in technology, Laser Hair removal is on the rise. Known in the past for being expensive and painful, it’s now more comfortable and much cheaper than it was 10 years ago. We can also treat a broad range of skin colors where in the past only lighter skin patients were considered candidates. More comfortable, less expensive and permanent hair reduction… you can’t say no to that!
ADVANCED LASERS FOR SKIN RESURFACING
With advancements in laser technology over the last 10 years, it is now possible to reduce, and in some cases remove facial wrinkles, acne scars and brown spots, without minimal disruption and downtime. Skin resurfacing has increased in popularity due to the fact that the skin is constantly exposed to harmful elements, like UV rays, environmental pollutants and even chemicals found in everyday products. Lasers, light based treatments and even skin tightening services have become more affordable, offer little to no downtime, and have become the go-to option for those who want to rejuvenate the skin without risky surgery.
THE RISE OF INJECTABLES
Injectable services such as fillers and neuromodulators are still one of the biggest trends in facial rejuvenation, seeing a total rise of 180% since 2000. Over the years, people are wanting to refresh their looks with less invasive procedures and without the cost that comes with cosmetic plastic surgery. Injectables give pleasing results with hardly any downtime, and can take 5-10 years off the look of the face. Today people are more openly talking about receiving these types of treatments, posting their before and after photos on social media and even encouraging friends and family to meet with their favorite injector. The days of hiding your Botox appointments are long gone!
BRO-TOX & BEYOND
Men have a growing interest of getting rid of wrinkles, frown lines, and achieving a more youthful, rested look. Over the last 10 years, men receiving medical spa services has risen with the idea that considering non-invasive cosmetic procedures can help them to appear more approachable, to stay competitive in an ever-younger millennial workforce, and to increase their confidence. Botox, fillers, facial services and even laser hair removal are treatment trends that are not slowing down with the male patient.
Honolulu Med Spa has a a monthly special with a lot of the services mentioned above.

There are so many options out there when it comes to fighting the signs of aging. Over the years, injectables have become the most sought out facial treatments to combat over-active muscles that lead to lines, wrinkles and deep creases over time. Injectables are a great cosmetic procedure for anyone wanting to enhance their face with a more relaxed, softened look without doing a highly invasive procedure such as a facelift. Injectable treatments such as Botox and Juvederm are gaining popularity due to their immediate results and the promise of little to no downtime.
We caught up with our two head nurses- Leilani and Courtney to ask them the questions you want answered. Read on to see what they had to say about injectable services!
Name all the injectables that are available at Honolulu MedSpa?
Leilani + Coutney: Kybella, Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Sculptra, PRP Facelift, Restylane (Silk, Lyft, Refyne, Defyne) Juvederm (XC, Ultra Plus, Voluma, Vollure, Volbella,)
What is one of the main side effects that we can see from getting botox?
Leilani: Side effects and undesirable outcomes are different. Side effects can be something like a headache. Undesirable results that resolve on their own is something like heaviness to brows or lid. A true side effect is Ptosis of the brow or eyelid.
Courtney: Adding onto Leilani’s, bruising
We see the rise of men getting injectables. What bothers them the most? (Forehead wrinkles? Tired eyes? Double chin? Crow’s feet?)
Leilani: All of it! Each guy is different.
Courtney: Agree, all of it
Have you seen any teens wanting injectables wanting to look like social media celebs like Kim and Kylie? Is there an age limit where they can start on these types of procedures?
Leilani: I’ve treated as young as 19 years old. 18 is considered an adult. I haven’t treated anyone younger than 19.
Courtney: Youngest patient was 20. She showed a picture of lips she desired. It was not specific to either Kardashian.
Not only does Botox help with fine lines and wrinkles. We see a lot more people getting the procedure done for migraines and even as an anti-aging benefit. What other are some benefits to Botox that we might not know about?
Leilani: There are more than 700 MEDICAL uses of Botox! It helps with muscle spasm, incontinence, Depression, just to name a few. Time magazine recently published the many uses of Botox.
Courtney: Adding to Leilani’s answer…Research and recent publications on Botox as an anti-depressant.
What is the difference between Botox and Juvederm? Which is better at fighting wrinkles?
Leilani: They are both different treatments and products. They are not the same. Botox relaxes muscles in the face that causes wrinkles. Juvederm restores volume loss to the face.
What other treatments would you recommend to combat fine lines and wrinkles if people are afraid of getting injected with a needle?
Leilani: Injectables are instant gratification treatments. Anything other than injectables to combat lines and wrinkles will take time, patience, and a SERIES of treatments to see results.
Lasers, peels, PRP Facials.
A good skin care regimen that is pharmaceutical grade that will CORRECT the skin is key, consistency. Products such as retinol, Vitamin C, SPF, and antioxidants are a must!
Courtney: Yes. Lasers, microneedling with PRP, RF (radio frequency). Most definitely products! Retinol, Vitamin C, growth factors, SPF!, hydration.
What are some common myths about getting Botox?
Leilani + Courtney: It will distort your face! You’ll look plastic. You’ll look fake. Botox lasts 6 months, which is not true.
How long does each injectable last for?
Leilani + Courtney: Fillers last up to 12 months or less. Botox lasts 3 months with full dosing, so maintenance is required for Botox every 3 months.
Kybella is permanent. Sculptors up to 2 years.
On average, how much is each injectable?
Leilani + Courtney: Neuromodulators are $11 per unit. Fillers start at $475 and up to $1500.
Is there any downtime with getting any of these injectables?
Leilani: Yes! Bruising and swelling can be a social downtime. People can take arnica 7 days prior to treatment.
Courtney: If considering injectables (fillers mostly). Plan treatments up to 4 weeks prior to any major event (photo shoot, wedding, etc…) this allows enough time for touch ups or add-ons, and for bruising to resolve. This varies per patient preference, area of treatment, and desired outcome.
Because everyone’s facial features are different in the aging process, it is highly recommended to meet with one of our Aesthetic Nurse Specialists for a complimentary consultation before any injections. Give us a call at 808.528.0888.

While a 12-step beauty routine isn’t for everyone, there is an added step that everyone should get on board with-serum. Adding a serum to your daily skincare routine can add a boost of results that can help with fine lines, dark spots, loss of firmness, blemishes and a healthier complexion.
We like to think of a serums as a vitamin-packed shot you add to your daily smoothie in the morning for targeted results.
What is a serum? A serum is a skincare product that has a gel or light lotion consistency with a higher concentration of performance ingredients to use under a moisturizer. They are made up of smaller molecules that penetrate deeper into the skin, making it great to target specific skin concerns.
How do I use a serum? Generally, you would cleanse your skin and tone your skin, then apply the serum right before you would apply your moisturizer or sunscreen. You press the serum into the skin gently with your middle and ring finger with palms to set the product in place.
Can I use a serum as my moisturizer? No. Although serums are usually full of moisturizing ingredients and help retain skin moisture, your moisturizer is meant to create a protective barrier to keep environmental irritants and debris out, and keep skin moisturized. Usually people with drier or mature skin need a heavier moisturizer, which serums will not provide.
How often should I use a serum? It’s usually a daily routine you now add with your other skincare products, but check the label. Trust us, it’s worth the extra step!
How much should I apply to my skin? Think of your face like a sponge. All you need is a few drops. Remember that serums are very concentrated, a little goes a long way.
Do you recommend any serums? Yes!

What’s your take on beauty when you work at Hawaii’s leading medical spa? We chatted with two of Honolulu MedSpa’s top medical aestheticians and laser technicians, Olivia Bears and Kanoe Oda, to find out.
Olivia fell into aesthetics accidentally after happening upon a booth for a beauty and wellness school at a college fair. Kanoe, on the other hand, was always interested in looking good, and knew skin care would be a perfect fit for her. Both ladies do some of the finest laser hair removal, facials and chemical peels you’ll experience anywhere on the island. But what do they follow when it comes to their personal beauty routines? We knew you’d ask. Read on for their answers.
How has living in Hawaii impacted your perspective on beauty and wellness in general?
Olivia: Hawaii is such a melting pot of cultures. Living here has reinforced for me just how different all of our needs and wants are in the sense of beauty. So having an open mind is key.
Kanoe: Living in Hawaii in particular, being in the sun is almost unavoidable and that has definitely made me realize how important it is to protect our skin from the sun.
Can you describe to us your personal skincare routine?
Olivia: I tend to have more temperamental skin, but I’m a product junkie, so it’s a problem. I love trying new things, but sometimes my skin doesn’t respond very nicely, so for the most part I keep it simple. As of right now, in the morning I use SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Gel and a physical, zinc-based sunscreen. Before bed, I always use my SkinMedica Retinol, usually followed by SM TNS Recovery Complex, and then usually finished with my SC Phyto Corrective Gel.
Kanoe: I think simple is best! After cleansing and toning, prevent, correct and protect.
What skincare products or ingredients are you most excited about these days?
Olivia: I love products that work overtime! Any product that can address multiple concerns or is diverse enough to use on multiple skin types is great in my book.
Kanoe: Antioxidants are amazing! I’m really excited about bringing SkinCeuticals back to the spa. 😉
Who is your beauty icon? Why?
Kanoe: Jessica Alba, she has a natural beauty which I aspire to have. And also with her new skincare line, she knows the importance of good quality ingredients and keeping beauty simple.
If we looked, what would we find in your bag right now?
Olivia: Lip balm, HydroFlask, hand lotion and doTerra Peppermint Beadlets.
Kanoe: Lip tint, eyeliner and powder.
What one treatment could you not live without?
Olivia: Laser hair removal.
Kanoe: Botox. 🙂
If you could speak to her now, what skincare or beauty advice would you give your 20-year-old self?
Olivia: “Stop looking for a ‘cure-all!’ There’s no quick fix for anything in life. Just take care of yourself!”
Kanoe: “Stay out of the sun!”
Give us your best anti-aging tip?
Olivia: Hydrate and start preventative measures young! It’s SO much easier to prevent aging than it is to reverse aging.
Kanoe: Always use sunscreen and take antioxidants.
What’s your personal beauty philosophy?
Olivia: Beauty starts on the inside. Happy people are the most beautiful people. But I also believe that we feel our best when our outside matches how we feel on the inside.
Kanoe: True beauty is a lifestyle and comes from the inside out.
Ever wonder what it’s like to work for Hawaii’s top medspa?
Get behind the scenes with our all-star team!
At just 23 years old, Olivia Bears is already one of our top medical aestheticians and laser technicians. You might have met her if you’ve come in for laser hair removal, Venus Freeze, or one of our rejuvenating facials. We asked Olivia about her work, her personal beauty routine, and her “famous last words.” Read on for her delightful answers.
Tell us a little bit about you. How did you end up working in the medical spa industry?
Olivia: I’ve always been interested in beauty, but as I got older, my interests were more specific to skin care. When I was 17, I went to a college fair and happened upon a booth for a beauty and wellness school in my area. That’s where my interest grew into a passion. When I moved to Hawaii in 2014, I decided to further my education in esthetics. With the help of my mentors at the Makana Esthetics and Wellness Academy, I was directed to the field of medical aesthetics. I don’t regret a single decision along the way throughout my journey!
What’s a typical day like at Honolulu MedSpa?
Olivia: Busy! Every day is different when you’re working one-on-one with clients because every client’s needs and expectations are different. I could be hopping from appointment to appointment every half hour in the laser hair removal room or I could be spending a little more in-depth time with a client in the facial room talking about different treatments or products he or she could try. It’s exciting!
What qualities do you think someone needs to have to be able to do your job well?
Olivia: Patience, listening skills, the ability to multi-task and be adaptable, and above all… passion for skin care!
What’s your favorite treatment to perform for your patients?
Olivia: I enjoy our medical grade facials the most because they give me time to sit down with a client and get a feel for what he or she is really wanting to get out of his or her treatment and skin in general.
What’s the funniest thing a patient has said to you?
Olivia: While performing a HydraFacial on a first-time client, he said, “Whoa! I feel like a cat is licking me, but I like it!”
What would you say to someone who’s never been to a medical spa before?
Olivia: Don’t be scared! Come in for a consultation. We’ll listen to you and get you started in the right direction.
What is the biggest misunderstanding people have about your job?
Olivia: I don’t get to get facials all the time. 🙁 Also, there is SO much thought that goes into treatment and products that I discuss with clients — skin care is anything but black and white.
What do you think makes Honolulu MedSpa the best medspa facility on the islands?
Olivia: I feel like we genuinely care about our clients’ well-being, but we also care about what’s doable for a client. We understand that beauty doesn’t come cheap, so we really try to guide our clients towards what will give them the best results for their goals and skin type. Not what will make us the most money.
What’s the best part of what you do?
Olivia: Seeing results and hearing how satisfied a client is.
Famous last words?
Olivia: Beauty is hard work and nothing worth having ever comes easy. 😉
