Brilliant Distinctions

Holiday Recipe with our Ambassador, Laura Mueseler!

Have you ever noticed how the foods you eat have an effect on your appearance? Healthy eating and healthy skin go hand in hand and there are a number of foods that will help you to get glowing, health skin from the inside out.

Foods like butternut squash and other winter squash are packed with Vitamin A and Vitamin C along with being rich in antioxidants, making them one of the best foods for healthy skin! The high Vitamin A content in Butternut Squash helps to produce skin cell turnover, along with keeping your skin both firm and healthy. One serving of butternut squash also contains about half of your daily dose of Vitamin C which boosts the production of collagen and helps to prevent signs of aging.

Butternut Squash and other winter squash are in season in the fall and winter months making them a great choice to serve at holiday meals as an appetizer, side dish or even dessert. With Thanksgiving just days away these delicious Honey Roasted Butternut Squash Crostini would make the perfect appetizer to share with family and friends. They are healthy and full of seasonal flavors and best of all, they’re so simple to make!

If time allows, try roasting the squash ahead of time so all you have to do is toast the bread and top it with the mixture of butternut squash, feta and arugula then finish it off by drizzling a little bit of honey over the top. The combination of the honey roasted squash and salty feta is oh-so delicious and the peppery arugula adds the perfect amount of crunch making for the perfect holiday appetizer!

The Making Of An Esthetician

I recently caught up with Malia Sanchez, the owner of the leading Esthetician School in Honolulu, Makana Academy Esthetics and Wellness. After growing up in the industry, as her mom was a cosmetologist and her aunt owning a salon, it was only natural for Malia to follow in their footsteps. With years of being an Esthetician, and then trainer for various skin care companies, Malia found her passion in teaching and training. In 2007, she opened Makana Academy Esthetics and Wellness, which is the only nationally accredited Esthetician school in Hawaii.

After celebrating 10 years of business, she continues to develop the most reputable esthetics school here on the island. Read on to find out more on the making of an Esthetician.

How long have you been in the industry?

Malia: I’ve been in the industry for over 24 years.

What is your role at the academy?

Malia: I’m the Director of Education. I develop the curriculum, hire staff, oversee facility, training and of course, students.

What type of credentials does an esthetic applicant need to have before considering applying to Makana?

Malia: You need to have a HS diploma or GED, 16 years old and be a U.S. Citizen.

What type of curriculum should be expected in an esthetic course?

Malia: We have 3 levels. Level 1 is where you learn about the skin, key active ingredients, chemistry and your hands-on in the classroom actually mixing ingredients. Level 2 is the introduction of facials. You get to learn basic facial techniques and partner up with your classmate to practice and learn all the different techniques. Level 3 is independent. You will be given actual clients to work on. We evaluate from start to finish, along with checkpoints. At the end, the client is given a survey on their treatment.

What is a typical class size?

Malia: We have no more than 10 students per class.

Have you noticed more demand for estheticians in recent years?

Malia: Absolutely. Before getting a facial was more of a luxury where you would get one for your birthday or anniversary. Now, people are wanting to improve their skin! It’s a necessity!

Have you noticed your graduates stay here in Hawaii or move off island to work in the field?

Malia: I see both! We have locals and then some military wives.

How many hours does a student need to complete before graduation?

Malia: 19 weeks and 600 hours.

After graduation, what’s next? Do they start applying for jobs?

Malia: Yes, they apply immediately. The first thing I tell them to do is to go to DCCA and apply for a work permit. I don’t guarantee work, but it’s a tight-knit industry, so I know many of the Dr.’s and MedSpa’s that I can put in a good word in if they are extremely hard workers.

Besides the hours and necessary licensing, what else does a hopeful Esthetician need to make it in this industry?

Malia: Emotional connections. You must be emotionally connected to your clients if you want to be successful. Your clients will keep coming back to you and refer their friends to you. This will keep you continuously booked. You must nurture your clients.

Can you imagine working in any other industry?

Malia: It’s so natural for me to be a coach! My relationships with my students continue beyond school. I could definitely see myself being a life coach!

About Honolulu MedSpa

While there is no magic way to get rid of stubborn fat, people are flocking to this game-changing procedure, CoolSculpting as the next best thing. Known for its whittling ways, both men and women have become a fan of this fat blasting treatment.

With our patients’ needs in mind, we have answered five of the most commonly asked questions of CoolSculpting…

It is the only FDA-cleared, non-surgical, fat-reduction treatment that uses controlled cooling to eliminate stubborn fat that resists all efforts through diet and exercise. Basically, it freezes your fat for good to contour your body without surgery or downtime.

Your provider at Honolulu MedSpa will do a thorough complimentary consultation and will customize a treatment plan for your body. Every body is different, but if you have noticeable bulges and pockets of unwanted fat which are resistant to diet and exercise, then CoolSculpting is right for you.

Most patients would say no. The first 5-10 minutes you will feel an intense cold sensation on the area treated, but that will soon subside. At Honolulu MedSpa, we make it as comfortable as we can for you, providing entertainment such as Netflix so you can catch up on your latest show or movie. If you need to have a snack or a drink of water while sculpting this is all OK and will not interfere with the treatment or results.

During the procedure, you may feel some discomfort such as tugging, pulling, or intense cold sensations. This will subdue once the area becomes numb. Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary redness, swelling, blanching, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, tenderness, cramping, aching, itching, or skin sensitivity. If you are treating the submental region (double chin) sensation of fullness in the back of the throat is common. These effects are temporary and generally resolve within days or weeks. Though rare, some additional side effects may occur. As with any medical procedure, ask your physician if the CoolSculpting procedure is right for you.

You may start to see changes as quickly as 3 weeks after the procedure, and will experience the more dramatic results after two months. Your body will continue to flush fat cells for 4 to 6 months after treatment.

If you feel CoolSculpting isn’t for you, we have other options available. Check out our Venus Freeze Cellulite Treatment and for more information about Venus Freeze Cellulite Reduction, you can also check out our recent blog post about it as well. Mahalo

Venus freeze cellulite reduction

Cellulite has been one beauty-related issue that millions of women suffer from that bothers us the most. Just because you have cellulite, it doesn’t mean that you are overweight. It’s the result of irregular pockets sitting in the subcutaneous fats that connect your muscle and bone rather than fat itself. Cellulite can be found not only on the thighs, but your butt, stomach and arms.

There’s no quick fix for cellulite, but here are some top tips that can lessen the appearance before you hit the beach and that is the Venus Freeze Cellulite Reduction

This non-invasive treatment helps to contour and reduce cellulite in as little as three treatments. Venus Freeze uses multipolar radio frequency and magnetic pulsed energy to produce a dense and uniformed heat matrix to the skin. With no downtime and no pain, this can be used on many body areas to reduce cellulite, contour the silhouette, and increase circulation. Call Honolulu MedSpa for a free consultation today or fill out our appointment request form below.

Skinceuticals Body Tightening Concentrate helps to tighten, firm and lift the appearance of sagging skin. With 2% of hydrolyzed rice protein, it helps to firm the skin on the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, knees and upper arms. You simply apply this concentrate to dry skin twice a day and will notice the skin appears more firm and smooth after only a few days. You can find this concentrate serum at Honolulu MedSpa.

This is one of the most effective ways to get blood circulating, encourage lymph drainage and smooth the surface of your skin all in one. Dry brushing is a combination of exfoliation and massage that involves taking a dry brush and moving over your body in slow, circular motions.

Workouts with high repetitions and lower weight paired with aerobics will help give you leaner, more toned look. Toning builds muscle and strength. Adding Venus Freeze Cellulite Reduction Treatment plus good diet and exercise will make your efforts much more visible.

Tanned skin always makes the skin appear tighter and more toned, so if you need an immediate solution for hiding cellulite quickly, use a self-tanner. Make sure to always exfoliate a few days prior to tanning so that your tan will not only last longer, but will fade evenly.

Dermaplaning, Microdermabrasion and Chemical Peels. What’s the difference?

About Honolulu MedSpa

With such a huge variety of exfoliating treatments available, it’s good to know the difference between dermaplaning, microdermabrasion and chemical peels. Women and men with various skin problems from sun damage to rosacea and even acne can benefit from these treatments.
Listed below are some skin care services that will help you achieve that healthy, youthful and glowing complexion you deserve!

Dermaplaning exfoliates the epidermis which removes dead skin cells and reduces fine hairs (peach fuzz) on the skin. It uses a scalpel to “shave” away the outermost layers of the skin to achieve smoother, brighter skin. This process is painless and very safe, especially for pregnant and nursing women as there are no chemicals or peeling agents applied to the skin. The beauty of it is, there’s no downtime and the results are immediate. Pricing starts at $175

Hydrafacial Microdermabrasion:
Our unique Hydrafacial system uses vortex technology that exfoliates away the top layers of dead, dull skin cells, revealing fresh, glowing, rejuvenated skin. Hydrafacial treats light scarring, discoloration, sun damage, and large pore size. It also helps to soften fine lines and wrinkles, which result in a younger looking complexion. As we age, our healthy cell turnover slows down, but with the help of Hydrafacial we can slough away impurities and reveal fresh, invigorated, glowing skin. There is no downtime associated with Hydrafacial. If extractions are performed you may see erythema to the area for a few hours post treatment. Pricing starts at $150

Chemical Peels:
A chemical peel uses a chemical solution to smooth the texture of your skin by removing the damaged outer layers. It is one of the least invasive ways to improve the appearance of your skin from sun exposure, acne, fine lines and wrinkles, brown spots and scaring. Chemical peels are used to improve the overall appearance of your skin. It’s important to keep in mind that the treatment, results and recovery time will vary depending on the strength of your chemical peel and sensitivity of your skin. There can be 3-5 days of social downtime as your skin will go through an exfoliation period. A tight, dry feeling to the skin should be expected during the week of recovery. Pricing starts at $125

If you have questions, or are interested in booking a complimentary consultation to learn which treatment is right for you, please contact Honolulu MedSpa at 808-528-0888.

Men receiving non-invasive beauty treatments

We all age, not just women, but men too. Our society has become tremendously age-conscious, and the culture of how aged celebrities look so much younger than they are has caught on with the general public. There is pressure among men of all ages to have a certain look, and they are finding it difficult to achieve with just diet and exercise alone, so they want a little help.

Men are increasingly seeking out non-invasive treatments in search of eternal youth. Many men seek these procedures to boost their appearance in a competitive work environment and just overall want to look and feel their best.

Here are the top non-invasive cosmetic procedures for men:

BOTOX for Crow’s feet and Lines, commonly referred to as “BROTOX”
CHEMICAL PEELS for Fresher, Younger Skin
DERMAL FILLERS for a Youthful Appearance
KYBELLA to Help Get Rid of a Double Chin
COOLSCULPTING to Freeze Away Unwanted Stubborn Fat

The advantage of these procedures is the fact that there is little-to-no downtime and the results are extremely fast without exposing that you’ve had any type of treatment done. Nowadays, these non-invasive treatments have become more affordable than even just a few years ago, making them economically feasible for anyone. It’s an investment in themselves, rather than an unnecessary expense.

These procedures are an opportunity to take a few years off while putting your best face forward.

If you are interested in any of the services above, or would like a complimentary consultation to determine which treatments are best for you, call us at 808-528-0888.

Asian beauty skincare woman touching skin on face

Thanks to revolutionary new technology increasing in the beauty industry over the years, patients can now enjoy satisfying results without committing to more invasive procedures and the high costs that come with them. It’s no surprise that more non-surgical treatments are more popular than ever now. Today we can improve our looks without suffering or breaking the bank. Take a look at some of the most popular treatment trends we’ve seen in the past ten years:

Waxing and shaving have now become things of the past. With the advancements in technology, Laser Hair removal is on the rise. Known in the past for being expensive and painful, it’s now more comfortable and much cheaper than it was 10 years ago. We can also treat a broad range of skin colors where in the past only lighter skin patients were considered candidates. More comfortable, less expensive and permanent hair reduction… you can’t say no to that!

With advancements in laser technology over the last 10 years, it is now possible to reduce, and in some cases remove facial wrinkles, acne scars and brown spots, without minimal disruption and downtime. Skin resurfacing has increased in popularity due to the fact that the skin is constantly exposed to harmful elements, like UV rays, environmental pollutants and even chemicals found in everyday products. Lasers, light based treatments and even skin tightening services have become more affordable, offer little to no downtime, and have become the go-to option for those who want to rejuvenate the skin without risky surgery.

Injectable services such as fillers and neuromodulators are still one of the biggest trends in facial rejuvenation, seeing a total rise of 180% since 2000. Over the years, people are wanting to refresh their looks with less invasive procedures and without the cost that comes with cosmetic plastic surgery. Injectables give pleasing results with hardly any downtime, and can take 5-10 years off the look of the face. Today people are more openly talking about receiving these types of treatments, posting their before and after photos on social media and even encouraging friends and family to meet with their favorite injector. The days of hiding your Botox appointments are long gone!

Men have a growing interest of getting rid of wrinkles, frown lines, and achieving a more youthful, rested look. Over the last 10 years, men receiving medical spa services has risen with the idea that considering non-invasive cosmetic procedures can help them to appear more approachable, to stay competitive in an ever-younger millennial workforce, and to increase their confidence. Botox, fillers, facial services and even laser hair removal are treatment trends that are not slowing down with the male patient.

There are so many options out there when it comes to fighting the signs of aging. Over the years, injectables have become the most sought out facial treatments to combat over-active muscles that lead to lines, wrinkles and deep creases over time. Injectables are a great cosmetic procedure for anyone wanting to enhance their face with a more relaxed, softened look without doing a highly invasive procedure such as a facelift. Injectable treatments such as Botox and Juvederm are gaining popularity due to their immediate results and the promise of little to no downtime.

We caught up with our two head nurses- Leilani and Courtney to ask them the questions you want answered. Read on to see what they had to say about injectable services!

What are the most popular injectable services you perform at Honolulu MedSpa?
Leilani: Botox and filler
Courtney: Botox and filler

Name all the injectables that are available at Honolulu MedSpa?
Leilani + Coutney: Kybella, Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Sculptra, PRP Facelift, Restylane (Silk, Lyft, Refyne, Defyne) Juvederm (XC, Ultra Plus, Voluma, Vollure, Volbella,)

What is one of the main side effects that we can see from getting botox?
Leilani: Side effects and undesirable outcomes are different. Side effects can be something like a headache. Undesirable results that resolve on their own is something like heaviness to brows or lid. A true side effect is Ptosis of the brow or eyelid.
Courtney: Adding onto Leilani’s, bruising

We see the rise of men getting injectables. What bothers them the most? (Forehead wrinkles? Tired eyes? Double chin? Crow’s feet?)
Leilani: All of it! Each guy is different.
Courtney: Agree, all of it

Have you seen any teens wanting injectables wanting to look like social media celebs like Kim and Kylie? Is there an age limit where they can start on these types of procedures?
Leilani: I’ve treated as young as 19 years old. 18 is considered an adult. I haven’t treated anyone younger than 19.
Courtney: Youngest patient was 20. She showed a picture of lips she desired. It was not specific to either Kardashian.

Not only does Botox help with fine lines and wrinkles. We see a lot more people getting the procedure done for migraines and even as an anti-aging benefit. What other are some benefits to Botox that we might not know about?
Leilani: There are more than 700 MEDICAL uses of Botox! It helps with muscle spasm, incontinence, Depression, just to name a few. Time magazine recently published the many uses of Botox.
Courtney: Adding to Leilani’s answer…Research and recent publications on Botox as an anti-depressant.

What is the difference between Botox and Juvederm? Which is better at fighting wrinkles?
Leilani: They are both different treatments and products. They are not the same. Botox relaxes muscles in the face that causes wrinkles. Juvederm restores volume loss to the face.
Courtney: Agree!

What other treatments would you recommend to combat fine lines and wrinkles if people are afraid of getting injected with a needle?
Leilani: Injectables are instant gratification treatments. Anything other than injectables to combat lines and wrinkles will take time, patience, and a SERIES of treatments to see results.
Lasers, peels, PRP Facials.
A good skin care regimen that is pharmaceutical grade that will CORRECT the skin is key, consistency. Products such as retinol, Vitamin C, SPF, and antioxidants are a must!

Courtney: Yes. Lasers, microneedling with PRP, RF (radio frequency). Most definitely products! Retinol, Vitamin C, growth factors, SPF!, hydration.

What are some common myths about getting Botox?
Leilani + Courtney: It will distort your face! You’ll look plastic. You’ll look fake. Botox lasts 6 months, which is not true.

How long does each injectable last for?
Leilani + Courtney: Fillers last up to 12 months or less. Botox lasts 3 months with full dosing, so maintenance is required for Botox every 3 months.
Kybella is permanent. Sculptors up to 2 years.

On average, how much is each injectable?
Leilani + Courtney: Neuromodulators are $11 per unit. Fillers start at $475 and up to $1500.

Is there any downtime with getting any of these injectables?
Leilani: Yes! Bruising and swelling can be a social downtime. People can take arnica 7 days prior to treatment.
Courtney: If considering injectables (fillers mostly). Plan treatments up to 4 weeks prior to any major event (photo shoot, wedding, etc…) this allows enough time for touch ups or add-ons, and for bruising to resolve. This varies per patient preference, area of treatment, and desired outcome.

Because everyone’s facial features are different in the aging process, it is highly recommended to meet with one of our Aesthetic Nurse Specialists for a complimentary consultation before any injections. Give us a call at 808.528.0888.

While a 12-step beauty routine isn’t for everyone, there is an added step that everyone should get on board with-serum. Adding a serum to your daily skincare routine can add a boost of results that can help with fine lines, dark spots, loss of firmness, blemishes and a healthier complexion.

We like to think of a serums as a vitamin-packed shot you add to your daily smoothie in the morning for targeted results.

What is a serum?  A serum is a skincare product that has a gel or light lotion consistency with a higher concentration of performance ingredients to use under a moisturizer. They are made up of smaller molecules that penetrate deeper into the skin, making it great to target specific skin concerns.

How do I use a serum?  Generally, you would cleanse your skin and tone your skin, then apply the serum right before you would apply your moisturizer or sunscreen. You press the serum into the skin gently with your middle and ring finger with palms to set the product in place.

Can I use a serum as my moisturizer?  No. Although serums are usually full of moisturizing ingredients and help retain skin moisture, your moisturizer is meant to create a protective barrier to keep environmental irritants and debris out, and keep skin moisturized. Usually people with drier or mature skin need a heavier moisturizer, which serums will not provide.

How often should I use a serum?  It’s usually a daily routine you now add with your other skincare products, but check the label. Trust us, it’s worth the extra step!

How much should I apply to my skin?  Think of your face like a sponge. All you need is a few drops. Remember that serums are very concentrated, a little goes a long way.

Do you recommend any serums?  Yes!

SkinCeuticals PHLORETIN CF:  A daytime vitamin c antioxidant face serum that delivers advanced environmental protection and diminishes the appearance of fine lines and discoloration. Great for normal, oily, and combination skin types.

SkinCeuticals CE FERULIC:  Known as the holy grail of serums, this is a daytime vitamin c serum that delivers advanced environmental protection and improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness, and brightens the skin’s complexion. Great for dry, normal and sensitive skin types.

You will notice that after incorporating a serum to your daily regimen, it will help you get the skin of your dreams.

Right now, we are having a monthly promotion on our serums mentioned above. If you purchase one, you get the SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF of your choice for FREE. ($34 VALUE).
