I have struggled with acne on and off throughout my adult life. It has been extremely frustrating to say the least. There have been times when I have felt like I tried it all and nothing was working. From over the counter products to prescription acne treatments and skincare regimens designed to clear up my skin, I continued to wake up with new breakouts almost daily. I know first-hand that acne can truly affect your self-esteem, your confidence, and your motivation to do the things you love. I found myself hiding; not wanting to go to events, dinners with my family, or hanging out with my friends.
Acne also began to affect my work life. Working at Honolulu MedSpa, patients look to me for skin advice, they are looking for help with their skin struggles. I thought to myself, “how can I make any type of recommendation when I myself am struggling with painful acne, scaring and hyperpigmentation from sun damage? Why would anyone take skin-care advice from someone who does not have a handle on their own skin?”
Something had to change. I decided to reach out to Kanoe, our lead aesthetician and Sarah, our lead laser specialist for help.
Kanoe completely changed my skincare routine. She took me off the harsh products I was using as well as the prescription-based treatments. She mentioned this was to give my skin a rest and let it breathe. She placed me on a simple and clean regimen and minimized the number of products I was using. As my skin began to heal and become less irritated, we slowly incorporated other products to address my concerns. I was scheduled for monthly HydraFacial’s with blue light to clean my skin and address overactive bacteria. Kanoe spent the time to discuss lifestyle choices with me and explained that diet can affect the skin. We discussed removing foods that can cause acne flare ups such as dairy, whey, peanut butter, and certain types of sugar. I started adding Apple Cider Vinegar to my morning routine to help with the gut.
Now that my skin was clearing up and the days of waking up with new breakouts were behind me, it was time to address the scaring, texture and unwanted pigment. I met with Sarah and she recommended a combination of lights and lasers to address my acne, scaring and hyperpigmentation. She recommended six treatments of the Fotona laser acne series and four treatments of AFT/IPL.
This treatment protocol worked wonders on my skin. It was not a quick fix, but the results are phenomenal. Sarah was wonderful, she knew when and where to be conservative or aggressive with the lasers & IPL. She is so knowledgeable, and I trust her completely with my skin.
Sculptra was another aspect to my treatment. This product helps stimulate collagen production and I know it helped also helped to improve the texture & tone of my skin.
Nine months ago, I wanted to hide. I could not talk to patients about skincare and felt nervous if the topic even came up. My patients have seen me struggle with my skin. They have been so supportive and have noticed the positive changes. I know this because so many of my patients are now saying things like, “Wow, you look great!” “Your skin looks so good from the last time I saw you 3 months ago! What are you doing?” “I want skin like yours!”
This journey has taught me a lot. I know what it’s like to want immediate results but it’s just not realistic. I have learned that it takes time and a multi-modality approach to achieve the type of success I’ve had with my skin.
Thank you for reading about my journey. I wholeheartedly believe in what we do here at Honolulu MedSpa. Our entire team truly cares about the concerns our patients have and will do everything in their power to help you achieve your skincare goals.
Below is my treatment plan designed by Kanoe and Sarah:

How’s your New Year’s resolutions coming along? Are you hitting your goals, or have you gotten off track? Usually, more than half of all resolutions fail, but it’s all about creating goals that are achievable and realistic. Start off by doing small, life-changing measures and work your way up. You don’t need to try and do them all at once.
Here’s how to stay focused on your New Year’s Goals:
MAKE A LIST
Write down your goals where you will see them. When you see what you’re working towards you will start putting the focus in and that will help keep you on track.
Be realistic and start with goals that are easy to achieve. For example: Drink more water, meditate more, eat more plants, rather than eating out, cook more healthy foods, or go for a walk in the park. Small goals lead to big goals and that is what we want to work towards.
SET MANAGEABLE GOALS
Don’t create a list that is too difficult to achieve. Be realistic about your time and your lifestyle. If you have to get the kids to practice immediately after work, schedule time for yourself in the morning or take a walk while they are on the field. Be realistic and don’t be too hard on yourself if the unexpected comes up.
HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE
Get a family member or close friend to help you stay focused and accountable. Consider your needs and what keeps you motivated. If group settings work best for you take this into consideration before you plan your goals.
CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESSES
By working on your list and crossing off the goals you have achieved, you gain confidence to tackle your next goal. Keep moving forward and know that there will be peaks and valleys along the way.
Never give up! As the months go on, it’s ok to revise it, tweak it and make it perfect for you!
EmSculpt is our new non-surgical procedure that helps to tighten abs while losing the flab. It uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy to trigger what’s called supramaximal contractions. It helps to tone, strengthen the ab muscles, firm abdominal muscles and also helps the toning and firming of the buttocks.
EmSculpt essentially causes 20,000 muscle contractions in just 30 minutes. Not only does it help slim stubborn fat areas; it also helps to treat mild diastasis recti, a condition where your abdominal muscles separate (usually during pregnancy) which will leave you with a pooch that exercise just can’t budge. Women are not the only patients who suffer from this, we see it in males too.
What happens during EmSculpt?
Your medical provider will lie you comfortably on the table depending on what area you are treating and will apply an applicator to the treatment side. For the first treatment, you will start out on the lowest setting as it begins sending high-intensity electromagnetic energy to the target muscles. As the treatment progresses, so do the settings, but within minutes patients are comfortable and able to tolerate the more intense contractions. During the 30 minutes, you will feel the contractions will follow an algorithm.
Overtime, you will be able to begin your treatments at higher settings, with no recovery or downtime needed.
When will I see the results of Emsculpt?
With a recommendation of four sessions- twice weekly treatments for two weeks, you will start to feel more toned and see results.
How long will EmSculpt results last?
A maintenance treatment is recommended every three to six months, but your muscle tone is dependant on your lifestyle and exercise routine after treatment.
Are there any side effects of EmSculpt?
No known side effects from EmSculpt have been reported. If you have a pacemaker or any metal in your body, you should not use EmSculpt.
Is EmSculpt right for me?
If you’re close to your ideal weight, but want more defined abs or a higher, rounder butt, EmSculpt is a good choice for you.
How much does EmSculpt cost?
Each treatment is customized and patients will receive pricing at their complimentary consultation. Packages of the treatment are recommended for best results, and we do offer maintenance treatments for those who have completed a series.
Contact Honolulu Medspa at 808.528.0888 for a consultation as it’s tailored to meet your exact needs.
Facials are recommended every 4-6 weeks to maintain healthy, glowing skin. It should be added to your regular skincare routine if you want to keep your skin balanced, and keep those breakouts at bay. Here are some dos and don’ts before and after a facial.
– Keep skin hydrated and drink lots of water to flush out all the toxins to keep that healthy, glowy complexion we all love immediately after the facial. More hydration means longer lasting results.
– Keep up with an exfoliant. Dead skin cells build up and depending on the facial, it is recommended to start your exfoliant 3 days after your facial and keep it up 2-3 days per week. The type of skin you present with, type of exfoliant and what treatments you receive will all help determine how often you should exfoliate.
– Use a brightening serum. We love our Vitamin C rich antioxidants and our Lytera. The goal is to brighten dull skin and boost collagen production. Brightening serums keep the skin balanced, toned and radiant.
– Follow your Aesthetician’s advice. We are always here to help you along your skin journey. Our recommendation are customized with your best interest in mind.
– Book your next monthly facial appointment. We offer packages on all of our services and pre-purchasing a series is the best way to stay committed and keep your skin looking its best!
– Try to avoid a spray tan as your skin tone will be slightly off. We have also noticed that when patients receive a spray tan to the face, they are more likely to have breakouts. No thanks!
– Don’t exfoliate our use high percentage retinols 48 hours before your appointment. We don’t want your skin to be over-sensitized and react poorly to the treatment.
– Avoid the steam room or heavy workouts that can make you sweat heavily. We just cleaned your skin, and some inflammation can happen. We suggest waiting 24-48 hours after your treatment to resume those heat related activities.
– Wax, shave or have laser hair removal immediately after. We do allow laser hair removal appointments to be booked right before the treatment, but not after. Waxing and shaving is permitted before, but not after.
– Spend time in the sun immediately after your appointment. Let your skin soak up all the goodness it just received and do not expose it to harmful UV rays. You are more likely to get a sunburn to the skin if you are exposed to sun immediately after an exfoliating facial
– Pick at the skin. Please just don’t. If we didn’t get it the first time there was a reason why. We will always explain what we are doing to the skin and what it can handle.
Ready to put these facial dos and don’ts into action? We look forward to helping you meet your skin care goals, give us a call to book your facial treatment at Honolulu MedSpa. Call us today at 808.528.0888
Are you drinking celery juice too? It seems like everywhere you turn, everyone is drinking celery juice thanks to “Medical Medium” Anthony Williams. He is the creator of this global celery juice movement and a four time New York Times best-selling author. Even celebs including Kim Kardashian, Naomi Campbell and Pharrell are jumping on the celery juice bandwagon. If you’re wondering what all the hype is about, or just want to know some fun facts; read on as we share the real, raw reasons we’re loving our celery juice and why you may just want to give it a try too.
Celery is an excellent source of vitamins A, C and K and has powerful antioxidants. With excellent sources of alkaline minerals like calcium, potassium and magnesium, this low calorie diet helps your body maintain its blood pH level.
Benefits of Celery Juice?
Anthony William insists that celery juice flushes out metal toxicity, pesticides and herbicides that are inside our liver. It helps to destroy bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms that can cause diseases.
It also helps with…
- Cleanses the body of toxicity
- Reduces bloating
- Lowers blood pressure
- Helps with eczema, psoriasis and acne
- Lowers cholesterol
- Aids in weight loss
- Ease digestion
- Helps with constipation
- Improves Kidney function
Juicing VS. Blending:
There are two ways you can drink this. If you have a juicer, run one bunch of celery through it. If you have a blender, blend it in a high-speed blender until smooth, then strain well and drink immediately.
He recommends drinking 16 ounces on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. Wait at least 15 minutes after drinking your celery juice before consuming anything else. If you’re sensitive, and drinking 16 ounces is too much, start with a smaller amount and work your way up. Use organic celery whenever possible and wash well before juicing.
Enjoy your morning!
We’ve all heard the popular misconceptions and rumored wives tales about beauty, but are they right? We are settling all the facts that are the most popular myths that we’ve all grown up to hear over the years…
MYTH #1: You don’t need to moisturize if you have oily skin.
FACT: No matter what your skin type is, you need to be using some kind of moisturizer to keep your skin balanced and nourished. While oily skin requires the least amount of added moisture, a moisturizer is still vital for nourishing and hydrating the skin.
MYTH #2: You only get acne from not washing your face.
FACT: Most cosmetic products that provide color and create illusion on the skin leave a toxic film on the skin’s surface that can cause irritation, inflammation, dehydration and clog the pores. But keep in mind that genetics, and hormonal fluctuations can cause those breakouts too. Many times meeting with a licensed skin professional is the best way to start your clear skin journey. It could be as simple as proper clinical and homecare maintenance to clear up irritation.
MYTH #3: You can get rid of cellulite permanently
FACT: Ultimately cellulite tends to be hereditary; it doesn’t just affect people who are overweight. Exercising and keeping the area toned reduces it, but you can only improve the appearance.
MYTH #4: People with dry skin age faster
FACT: The main cause of ageing skin is predominantly sun exposure, smoking and pollution. Over time, sun exposure breaks down collagen fibers which keep the skin looking youthful and plump. Dry skin does not cause wrinkles or ageing, however it can emphasise them.
MYTH #5: Applying a higher SPF means you can stay in the sun for a long time
FACT: Theoretically, a higher SPF increases the amount of time you can stay in the sun and be protected, however, you still need to reapply regularly as sunscreen with a high SPF wears off as well. Ingredients play a role in protections as well. Look with products that have a high zinc level for optimal protection.
MYTH #6: All-Natural products are the best
FACT: Natural may be “in” and sound good, but the fact is that these products hardly ever deliver on their promises. Look for medical-grade products with pharmaceutical-grade ingredients for products that will truly change, correct and improve the skin.
MYTH #7: All I need to do for great skin is drink 8 glasses of water a day
FACT: While water is great for overall health, it is a small part of the picture when it comes to the quality of your skin. Protecting your skin with sunscreen and using a proper skincare regimen is vital to keep your skin looking its best.
MYTH #8: You should use the same skincare products for day and night
FACT: During the day, your skin is in “protect” mode, and you should help it on its way with products that offer defense from free radical damage and sunlight. Always wear sunscreen or skincare products that provide SPF protection and include antioxidants. At night, your skin is no longer defending itself from pollution or light, and so night time products tend to be more regenerative and contain restorative ingredients such as peptides, vitamins and retinol.
MYTH #9: Rubbing alcohol will “kill” your acne.
FACT: Rubbing alcohol is much too drying and irritating for skin. It will dry you out so much that your skin will overcompensate by producing excess sebum and clog you up.
MYTH #10 Botox prevents wrinkles permanently
FACT: Botox can help prevent deep imprinted lines that we refer to as wrinkles because of the effect of relaxing the muscles that can cause creases in the skin. When you have Botox, you are preventing fine lines and preventing the deepening of those wrinkles that you already have. If you start early, you will atrophy the facial muscles and weaken them so you don’t have to get Botox as often when you are older.

Between the heat and the sun, there is no doubt that our skin took a beating over the summer months. With the seasons changing, so does the weather, and it’s the perfect time to do some major skin recovery to get your skin back to a healthy state. Here are some post-summer skin recovery tips to get that glow back!
Exfoliate for clearer, smoother skin. It helps to remove dead, dulling skin debris to prevent congestion and improve hydration from serums, moisturizers and sunscreens. One of our top picks is the Ultimate Hydration facial. With the exfoliation of our Hydrafacial + the benefits of the Oxygen infusion, this is a great way to not only decongest the skin, but bring back hydration and balance to the skin.
KEEP THE SKIN HYDRATED
Moisturizing is one of the most important steps to any skin care routine! Not only does it help to lock in moisture, but it also helps to soothe your skin. Make sure you are using the right moisturizer that fits your skin’s needs. At Honolulu MedSpa we carry only physician dispensed skincare. If you would like to try a product, or learn more about the skincare line which is right for you please give us a call to book your complimentary consultation.
With months of time spent in the sun and heat, hyper-pigmentation from the sun and new brown spots can surely pop up. Chemical peels are a great way to freshen up the skin after the summer. By removing part of the dead skin layer, peels can improve skin radiance and lighten discoloration. The Vitalize peel is excellent for anyone that has some sun damage and acne that wants a fresh, more even-toned and less broken out skin.
Fall is a great time to get started on your summer skin recover! Call Honolulu MedSpa for a free consultation at 808.528.0888.
CoolSculpting is a non-invasive body contouring procedure that is a non-surgical method to lose unwanted fat. By freezing the unwanted fat cells, it is safer than liposuction and promotes minimal downtime, which allows you to get right back to your daily activities following treatment.
Coolsculpting is not a quick fix or permanent solution to achieve weight loss. However, it does help with those stubborn areas on the body where the fat just doesn’t seem to budge no matter how hard you workout or diet.
Coolsculpting destroys up to 20% of fat which is targeted with each treatment, and is well tolerated by patients. There is such a thing as an ideal patient for CoolSculpting; someone who is at a stable weight, or has recently lost the extra weight putting them within their target “zone” and someone who lives a healthy lifestyle. CoolSculpting is a treatment for those who are stuck with stubborn fat bulges that may be deemed “exercise resistant fat.” If you are looking for general weight loss, start with a healthy eating and exercise plan that you can adopt as a lifestyle choice.
Losing or gaining weight does not destroy fat cells, but instead, changes the size of the fat cells. When you diet, you shrink your fat cells and when you gain weight, your expand your fat cells. Coolsculpting helps by targeting problematic areas with a method known as Cryolypolisis, this destroys up to 20% of fat cells permanently. This is the only known treatment of it’s kind and has been FDA approved for the permanent removal of unwanted fat.
If you have stubborn fat to lose, CoolSculpting is the right choice for you. This treatment is not a quick fix for weight loss and should not be used to drop extra lbs. If you are looking for a sleeker, slimmer profile and have a few problem areas to discuss, give us a call at 808-528-0888 to book a complimentary consultation.
CoolSculpting treatments will be 10% off through the month of August when booked at your consultation appointment. We hope to see you soon!
